About the Approach

What is Schema Therapy?

Schema therapy addresses the deep emotional patterns (called "schemas") formed in childhood that continue to shape your relationships, self-image, and reactions to stress. It goes beyond surface-level symptoms to work with the root causes, combining cognitive, emotional, and experiential techniques.

Schema therapy is especially relevant for:

What to Expect

What Schema Therapy Looks Like in Practice

In the early phase, we work together to map out the core patterns, or schemas, that are shaping your life. This might include patterns like abandonment, emotional deprivation, self-sacrifice, or defectiveness. Most people recognise their patterns quickly once they have a framework for them.

From there, sessions move into deeper emotional work: understanding where these patterns formed, what needs went unmet, and how your coping strategies developed. Schema therapy uses a combination of cognitive techniques, chair work, imagery, and guided reflection to work with these patterns at both a thinking and feeling level.

Over time, the goal is to develop what schema therapists call the "Healthy Adult" mode: a stronger internal voice that can meet your own needs, set boundaries, and respond to old triggers differently.

Questions

Schema Therapy FAQ

What's the difference between schema therapy and CBT?
CBT focuses on changing thoughts and behaviours in the present. Schema therapy goes deeper. It addresses the childhood origins of your patterns and uses emotional and experiential techniques alongside cognitive ones. Many clients find schema therapy reaches places that CBT alone didn't.
How long does schema therapy take?
It depends on the complexity of your patterns. Some clients see meaningful shifts in 3-6 months. Deeper, more entrenched patterns may take longer. We'll discuss realistic expectations during your consultation.
Is schema therapy right for me?
If you notice recurring patterns in relationships, struggle with self-worth, or feel stuck despite previous therapy, schema therapy may be an excellent fit. A free consultation can help us determine this together.
Are sessions online?
Yes. All sessions are virtual and available in Richmond Hill and across Ontario.
Do you offer sessions in Farsi?
Yes. Sessions are available in Farsi (فارسی), English, or both.
I grew up speaking Farsi at home in Richmond Hill but I think in English now. Which language should schema therapy be in?
Either, or both. Some people start in English and move into Farsi when a memory or a parent's words come up, and that switch can be useful in schema work. Ghazal Sheikhtaheri, an Iranian immigrant and Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), CRPO #21300, works in both languages by video, for clients anywhere in Ontario.
Richmond Hill has a large Iranian community. Is schema therapy with Ghazal only for Iranian clients?
No. Schema therapy is used with people of every background, and Ghazal works with clients from many cultures, in English or Farsi. If your first language is a different one, you are welcome to bring its words and phrases into sessions wherever they matter.

Schema therapy in Richmond Hill, in the language it began in

Schemas form early, in whatever language a child's family spoke. For the 10.3% of Richmond Hill residents whose mother tongue is Persian, and for the many others who grew up speaking another language at home, the first messages about worth and love were spoken in that language: what a good child does, what happens when you disappoint someone, whose needs come first. Those messages were absorbed long before anyone could question them.

That matters because schema therapy works with feeling, not only with thought. In imagery work you return, in your mind, to a moment when an old pattern took hold; in chair work you give the inner critic a voice and then answer it. Bilingual people sometimes find that these exercises feel distant in their second language and suddenly vivid in their first. A phrase a parent used, heard again in its original words, can reach the part of you that still believes it, and that is where the work can begin.

Some bilingual people also notice that their inner critic speaks one language and their calmer, coping self speaks another. Paying attention to which voice uses which language can be revealing in itself, and in schema work it becomes a way to reach each part more directly: answering the critic in the language it uses, or letting the vulnerable child side speak in the words it first had.

The patterns themselves are not cultural traits. Unrelenting standards, emotional deprivation, subjugation and the rest appear in families everywhere; what culture shapes is how they sound. Ghazal Sheikhtaheri, Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), CRPO #21300, was born in Iran and completed her first graduate degree, in clinical psychology, in Tehran before further study in Canada and advanced schema therapy training in Germany. She can follow a pattern through Farsi and English without it needing to be translated first, and she treats both languages as equally good places for the work.

You do not need to be fluent in Farsi, or Iranian, to work with her. Sessions can be held entirely in English. The point is simply that no part of your history has to be left outside the room because of the language it happened in.

Sessions are online, which can suit experiential work: you are in your own space and do not have to compose yourself for a drive home afterwards. Nobody has to travel: you can take part from anywhere in Richmond Hill, from the streets around the Mill Pond to Bayview Hill, or from elsewhere in Ontario.
