What It Can Feel Like

Loss, change and starting over.

I.

Losing someone

Grief that comes in waves: on ordinary days, at anniversaries, in the middle of a task. There is no right way to grieve, and no schedule to keep.

II.

Losses others may not see

The end of a relationship, a job or a friendship, or of a hope for how life would go. Losses like these deserve room too.

III.

Life changing shape

A move, a new job, a relationship beginning or ending, children leaving home. Even a change you wanted can take more out of you than you expected.

IV.

Missing home, starting over

Culture shock, missing home, starting over in a second language, and the quiet pressure to be fine.

How Roya Works

New ways forward, in Roya's words.

Roya Dadollahi Sarab, RP

For more than ten years, I've sat with people at some of the hardest points in their lives. I've worked in clinics and in private practice, with individuals and couples from many walks of life.

No single method fits everyone, so I don't use just one. I'm experienced in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, CBT, and Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples. When emotions arrive faster than you can manage them, skills from Dialectical Behaviour Therapy give you something steady to hold. CBT runs alongside all of it, so you leave each session with something you can actually use.

I also offer culturally responsive care in English and Farsi, which many clients who are balancing two cultures find especially helpful.

Therapy isn't about changing who you are or telling you how to live. It's a safe, non-judgmental space to explore, process and find new ways forward.

Sometimes life can feel like being stuck in a deep pit. I hold the rope steady; you take each step out. Progress doesn't have to be perfect, and you don't need to have it all figured out before we begin.

The Approaches

Four approaches Roya can bring to grief and change. The mix is chosen with you, and it can shift as the work goes on.

I.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Making room for loss and change without letting them decide everything that comes next, and moving toward what still matters to you.

II.

DBT skills

Skills such as distress tolerance and emotion regulation, for the moments when grief or change feels too big to think through, practised within individual therapy.

III.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction

Mindfulness practices for coming back to the present when your mind keeps returning to what was lost, or racing toward what comes next.

IV.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Practical work on the thoughts and habits that can keep a hard stretch going, with coping strategies you can practise between sessions.

What a Session Looks Like

From the first call to a shared plan.

You don't need to have the words for it yet. What you bring to the first call is enough, and the pace stays yours.

I.

A free 15-minute call

You book it online, on Roya's calendar on Jane, and talk by video or phone, in English or Farsi. You share a little about what is bringing you in, and together you see whether it feels like a fit.

II.

Your first full session

You talk about what's going on, at your own pace. Nothing is forced, and there's no pressure to share everything at once. Roya also explains how confidentiality works, including its limits.

III.

A shared plan

Together you agree on what you want to be different and how you'll work on it. Sessions are 60 minutes, by secure video, in English, Farsi or a mix of both.

IV.

You decide

There is no commitment until you're ready. There's no set number of sessions, and you can pause or stop whenever you choose.

An Honest Fit

Who this work suits, and when something else will.

It may suit you if

  • You've lost someone or something that mattered, and the grief still arrives in waves you weren't expecting.
  • Your life has changed shape, through a move, a new role or an ending, and you'd like help finding your footing.
  • You're new to Canada, or still settling in, and missing home sits alongside the pressure to be fine.
  • You'd like practical skills as well as room to talk: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, DBT skills, mindfulness and CBT.
  • You'd like to work in English, Farsi or a mix of both, online from anywhere in Ontario, at a daytime, evening or weekend time.

Something else may fit better if

  • You're in crisis or unsafe right now. Therapy is for ongoing support, not emergencies. If you are in immediate danger, call 911. If you are in crisis, call or text 988, the Suicide Crisis Helpline, available 24/7.
  • You'd like to meet in person. Sessions with Roya are online only, by secure video, anywhere in Ontario.
  • The loss or the change is one you share with a partner, and you'd like to come together. Roya also sees couples, using Emotionally Focused Therapy; you'll find its page among the links below.
  • The loss has stirred up an older pattern, and you'd like to understand where it began, not only how to live alongside it. That is the work of schema therapy, which at NoorMinds is offered by Ghazal Sheikhtaheri, RP (Qualifying), currently booking by waitlist (3–4 weeks). Her page, Schema Therapy in Ontario, is linked below.

Somewhere in between? That's what the free consultation is for: you can talk it through with Roya, and if another approach or another therapist would suit you better, she'll tell you. If you are in immediate danger, call 911. If you are in crisis, call or text 988, the Suicide Crisis Helpline, available 24/7. You can ask 988 for an interpreter. می‌توانید از ۹۸۸ درخواست مترجم کنید.

Questions

Common questions

How does Roya work with grief and life transitions?
Roya draws on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, skills from Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, mindfulness practices from Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, and CBT, and adjusts the mix to you. Her approach is warm, collaborative and culturally responsive, and the pace is set together. Sessions are 60 minutes, by secure video, in English, Farsi or a mix of both.
What counts as a life transition?
Any change that reshapes your days faster than you can adjust: a move to a new city or country, a new job or the loss of one, a relationship beginning or ending, becoming a parent, children leaving home, or retirement. A change can be one you wanted and still be hard.
Is missing home a kind of grief?
It can be. Culture shock, missing home, starting over in a second language and the quiet pressure to be fine are part of what Roya works with, in English or Farsi. If settling into a new country is the main thing you want help with, Therapy for Immigrants in Ontario covers it in more detail.
Do I have to talk about the loss straight away?
No. You talk about what's going on at your own pace, and nothing is forced. Some people start with the loss itself, and others with how daily life has changed around it.
Can we come as a couple?
Yes. Roya works with couples using Emotionally Focused Therapy. Couples sessions are $225 for 60 minutes or $350 for 90 minutes.
Can I do grief therapy in Farsi?
Yes. Roya works in English and Farsi (فارسی), online across Ontario.
Do I need a referral or a diagnosis, and how soon can I start?
You don't need a referral or a diagnosis to start therapy with Roya. If you want an assessment or medication, your physician is the person to ask, since a Registered Psychotherapist doesn't diagnose medical conditions or prescribe medication. One thing to check with your insurer: some plans only reimburse once a physician has made a referral. As for timing, Roya is accepting new clients, with daytime, evening and weekend times, and the quickest way to see her actual times is to book a free 15-minute consultation with Roya: her calendar is live on Jane. If you message first, you'll hear back within one business day.
How much does it cost, and is it covered?
$180 for a 60-minute individual session, after a free 15-minute consultation. Roya is a Registered Psychotherapist (CRPO #008767), and many extended health plans cover psychotherapy with a Registered Psychotherapist. Receipts are provided after every session; check your plan. Psychotherapy with a Registered Psychotherapist in private practice is not covered by OHIP. NoorMinds does not currently offer direct insurance billing. You pay for the session and submit your receipt for reimbursement.
