What somatic therapy is, in plain language

"Somatic" simply means "of the body". Somatic therapy is a family of body-based approaches that pay attention to what you notice physically, such as tension, breath, temperature, posture or the urge to move, as well as to what you think and feel.

In a session, you might slow down and notice where a feeling sits in your body, or what happens in your shoulders when a certain memory comes up. You might practise ways of grounding yourself in the present: feeling your feet on the floor, looking around the room, slowing your breath. Difficult material is approached in small doses, with plenty of room to come back to something steadier in between.

Online somatic therapy involves no touch. Everything happens through attention, words and small movements you choose to make yourself. Nobody can promise what somatic work will change for you, or how long it will take. That is something you and your therapist look at honestly, together, as you go.

Do any of these feel familiar?

None of this means something is wrong with you. Bodies learn to protect us, and sometimes they keep doing it long after the danger has passed.

The free consultation

A calm 15-minute conversation, by video or phone. You share a little about what brings you, ask how Armin brings somatic work into sessions, and see whether it feels like a fit. No pressure, no obligation.

Building a sense of steadiness

Early sessions focus on what is happening now and on noticing what helps you feel even a little more settled. You build those resources first, so there is something to come back to.

Working in small steps

When harder feelings or memories come up, you stay with them only briefly, notice what happens in your body, and return to steadier ground. You can pause or stop at any time.

Format and pace

Weekly 60-minute individual sessions, $180, by secure video, in English, Farsi or a mix of both. You will need a private space with a little room to sit comfortably, and a stable internet connection. There is no set number of sessions and no minimum commitment.

Questions

Common questions about somatic therapy

How much does somatic therapy cost?
$180 for a 60-minute individual session, after a free 15-minute consultation.
Will my insurance cover it?
Many extended health plans cover psychotherapy with a Registered Psychotherapist. Armin holds the Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) designation, which some plans reimburse the same way and some do not, so please check with your plan first. Psychotherapy in private practice is not covered by OHIP, and NoorMinds does not currently offer direct insurance billing: you pay for the session and submit the receipt.
What somatic training does Armin have?
Armin has completed additional training in somatic approaches, along with additional training in EMDR, Brainspotting, parts-based work (IFS), Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples, and trauma. He has been practising as a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) since 2024, under clinical supervision.
What does RP (Qualifying) mean?
It is a registration category of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). Registrants in this category practise under clinical supervision while they complete the final requirements for full registration. Armin's clinical supervisor is Maryna Svitasheva, PhD, RP (CRPO #002978).
Can somatic therapy work online if there is no touch?
Somatic therapy as offered at NoorMinds does not involve touch. It works through attention, breath, posture and small movements you choose yourself, all of which can happen by secure video. If online work doesn't feel right for you, raise it in the free consultation.
Will I have to talk about what happened?
Not in detail, and not before you are ready. Much of somatic work is noticing what is happening in your body right now. You decide how much you share.
Is somatic therapy the same as somatic trauma therapy?
People use both terms. Somatic trauma therapy usually means body-based work focused on the effects of trauma. Armin brings somatic work into trauma-focused therapy, alongside approaches like EMDR, Brainspotting and parts-based work.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on what you are working with, and nobody can promise a number or an outcome. There is no minimum commitment.
Can sessions be in Farsi?
Yes. Sessions can be in English, in Farsi, or in a mix of both.
What if I'm in crisis?
Therapy is for ongoing support, not emergencies, and calls and messages to NoorMinds aren't monitored for emergencies. If you are in immediate danger, call 911. If you are in crisis, call or text 988, the Suicide Crisis Helpline, available 24/7. You can ask 988 for an interpreter.
