IFS Therapy in Ontario

Part of you wants to rest. Another part keeps pushing. One part is furious, another is ashamed of being furious, and a third just wants to disappear for the evening. If that sounds familiar, you are not falling apart. IFS therapy starts from the idea that all of us are made of parts, and that each one is trying, in its own way, to help. With Armin Ovaisy-Moakhar, RP (Qualifying), who is experienced in evidence-based, trauma-focused therapy with adults and couples. Online across Ontario, in English or Farsi.

What internal family systems therapy is, in plain language

Internal Family Systems, or IFS, was developed by Richard Schwartz. It sees the mind as a kind of inner family. Some parts work hard to keep you functioning and safe: the inner critic, the planner, the people-pleaser. Some step in fast when pain gets close: the part that scrolls, drinks, binges or shuts down. And some parts carry old hurt, fear or shame that the others are working to keep out of sight.

In IFS, the aim is not to get rid of any part. It is to get to know them with curiosity instead of judgement: what each one is afraid of, what it is protecting, and what it needs. IFS also describes a calmer, more curious centre in everyone, called the Self, that can relate to these parts with patience.

IFS is one of several parts-based approaches. Others, such as Ego State Therapy, share the same basic idea. Nobody can promise what parts work will change for you, or how long it will take. That is something you and your therapist look at honestly, together, as you go.

Do any of these feel familiar?

None of this means you are broken. These patterns usually started as ways of getting through something hard.

The free consultation

A calm 15-minute conversation, by video or phone. You share a little about what brings you, ask how Armin works with parts, and see whether it feels like a fit. No pressure, no obligation.

Getting to know your parts

Early sessions are about what is happening now and what you want to be different. When a strong feeling or reaction comes up, Armin may invite you to turn toward it and get curious: where you notice it, what it seems to want, how old it feels.

Going at the pace of your protectors

Parts that protect you are not pushed aside. If one of them doesn't want to go further, that is respected and explored. Deeper or more painful material is approached only when it feels manageable.

Format and pace

Weekly 60-minute individual sessions, $180, by secure video, in English, Farsi or a mix of both. You will need a private space and a stable internet connection. There is no set number of sessions and no minimum commitment.

Questions

Common questions about IFS therapy

How much does IFS therapy cost?
$180 for a 60-minute individual session, after a free 15-minute consultation.
Will my insurance cover it?
Many extended health plans cover psychotherapy with a Registered Psychotherapist. Armin holds the Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) designation, which some plans reimburse the same way and some do not, so please check with your plan first. Psychotherapy in private practice is not covered by OHIP, and NoorMinds does not currently offer direct insurance billing: you pay for the session and submit the receipt.
What IFS training does Armin have?
Armin has completed additional training in parts-based work (IFS), along with additional training in EMDR, Brainspotting, somatic approaches, Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples, and trauma. He has been practising as a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) since 2024, under clinical supervision.
What does RP (Qualifying) mean?
It is a registration category of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). Registrants in this category practise under clinical supervision while they complete the final requirements for full registration. Armin's clinical supervisor is Maryna Svitasheva, PhD, RP (CRPO #002978).
Is IFS therapy the same as parts work?
"Parts work" is a broad term for approaches that work with different parts of the self. Internal family systems therapy is one well-known version. Armin works with parts-based approaches such as Internal Family Systems.
Does talking about "parts" mean something is wrong with me?
No. In IFS, having parts is ordinary. Everyone has them. It is a way of describing inner experience, not a diagnosis.
Can IFS be done online?
Yes. IFS is mostly conversation and inner attention, so it moves to secure video fairly naturally. If online work doesn't feel right for you, that is worth raising in the free consultation.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on what you are working with, and nobody can promise a number or an outcome. There is no minimum commitment.
Can sessions be in Farsi?
Yes. Sessions can be in English, in Farsi, or in a mix of both. Sometimes a part speaks one language more than the other.
What if I'm in crisis?
Therapy is for ongoing support, not emergencies, and calls and messages to NoorMinds aren't monitored for emergencies. If you are in immediate danger, call 911. If you are in crisis, call or text 988, the Suicide Crisis Helpline, available 24/7. You can ask 988 for an interpreter.
