Brainspotting Therapy in Ontario

Some things are hard to put into words. You can explain what happened, and still feel it sitting somewhere in your chest, your throat or your stomach, untouched by the explaining. Brainspotting is an approach that works with where you look and what you notice in your body, often with fewer words. With Armin Ovaisy-Moakhar, RP (Qualifying), who is experienced in evidence-based, trauma-focused therapy with adults and couples. Online across Ontario, in English or Farsi.

What brainspotting is, in plain language

Brainspotting starts from a simple observation: where we look can change how strongly we feel something. In a session, you bring to mind something that troubles you and notice where you feel it in your body. Your therapist then helps you find an eye position, a "brainspot", where that feeling seems stronger or clearer. You keep your gaze there and stay curious about whatever comes up: sensations, images, memories, or nothing much at all.

You don't have to describe it all as you go. Some people talk a lot, some say very little. Sometimes quiet music or sounds that move between your ears are used in the background.

Brainspotting is a newer approach, and research on it is still limited compared with some other trauma therapies. Nobody can promise what it will change for you, or how long it will take. That is something you and your therapist look at honestly, together, as you go.

Do any of these feel familiar?

None of this means something is wrong with you. Many people carry experiences that were never fully put into words, and that is a very human thing.

The free consultation

A calm 15-minute conversation, by video or phone. You share a little about what brings you, ask how Armin uses brainspotting, and see whether it feels like a fit. No pressure, no obligation.

Getting started

Early sessions are about what is happening in your life now, what you want to be different, and how you notice and steady yourself when feelings get strong. You go at your own pace.

Finding a brainspot online

By secure video, Armin may guide your gaze using a pointer on screen, or ask you to look toward a spot in your own room. You stay with that spot while you notice what happens inside. You can look away or stop whenever you need to.

Closing each session

Each session leaves time to come back to the room and settle before you go back to your day.

Format and pace

Weekly 60-minute individual sessions, $180, by secure video, in English, Farsi or a mix of both. You will need a private space, a stable internet connection, and ideally headphones. There is no set number of sessions and no minimum commitment.

Questions

Common questions about brainspotting

How much does brainspotting therapy cost?
$180 for a 60-minute individual session, after a free 15-minute consultation.
Will my insurance cover it?
Many extended health plans cover psychotherapy with a Registered Psychotherapist. Armin holds the Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) designation, which some plans reimburse the same way and some do not, so please check with your plan first. Psychotherapy in private practice is not covered by OHIP, and NoorMinds does not currently offer direct insurance billing: you pay for the session and submit the receipt.
What brainspotting training does Armin have?
Armin has completed additional training in Brainspotting, along with additional training in EMDR, parts-based work (IFS), somatic approaches, Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples, and trauma. He has been practising as a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) since 2024, under clinical supervision.
What does RP (Qualifying) mean?
It is a registration category of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). Registrants in this category practise under clinical supervision while they complete the final requirements for full registration. Armin's clinical supervisor is Maryna Svitasheva, PhD, RP (CRPO #002978).
Can brainspotting be done online?
Armin offers brainspotting by secure video, using a pointer on screen or a spot in your own room to guide your gaze. If online work doesn't feel right for you, that is worth saying in the free consultation.
How is brainspotting different from EMDR?
Both pay attention to the eyes and the body. EMDR moves through structured steps with side-to-side eye movements, taps or tones. Brainspotting usually holds the gaze still on one spot and follows whatever comes up, with less structure. Armin works with both, and you can talk through which one, if either, suits you.
Do I have to talk the whole time?
No. Some sessions are quiet. You share what you want to share, when you want to share it.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on what you are working with, and nobody can promise a number or an outcome. There is no minimum commitment.
Can sessions be in Farsi?
Yes. Sessions can be in English, in Farsi, or in a mix of both.
What if I'm in crisis?
Therapy is for ongoing support, not emergencies, and calls and messages to NoorMinds aren't monitored for emergencies. If you are in immediate danger, call 911. If you are in crisis, call or text 988, the Suicide Crisis Helpline, available 24/7. You can ask 988 for an interpreter.
