These patterns aren't random, and they aren't your fault. Schema therapy can help you understand where they come from and begin to change them.
Book with GhazalSchema therapy addresses the deep emotional patterns (called "schemas") formed in childhood that continue to shape your relationships, self-image, and reactions to stress. It goes beyond surface-level symptoms to work with the root causes, combining cognitive, emotional, and experiential techniques.
Schema therapy is especially relevant for:

Book with Ghazal15 minutes to discuss what you're experiencing and whether schema therapy might be a good fit.
In early sessions, we identify your core schemas and the coping strategies you've developed around them.
Weekly 60-minute sessions combining cognitive restructuring, experiential exercises, and compassionate re-parenting techniques.
In the early phase, we work together to map out the core patterns, or schemas, that are shaping your life. This might include patterns like abandonment, emotional deprivation, self-sacrifice, or defectiveness. Most people recognise their patterns quickly once they have a framework for them.
From there, sessions move into deeper emotional work: understanding where these patterns formed, what needs went unmet, and how your coping strategies developed. Schema therapy uses a combination of cognitive techniques, chair work, imagery, and guided reflection to work with these patterns at both a thinking and feeling level.
Over time, the goal is to develop what schema therapists call the "Healthy Adult" mode: a stronger internal voice that can meet your own needs, set boundaries, and respond to old triggers differently.

NoorMinds provides virtual schema therapy to residents throughout Ontario. Select your city to learn more:
Vaughan added close to 17,000 residents between 2016 and 2021, growing 5.5% to 323,103, and much of the city still has the look of something under construction: a new downtown core and new subdivisions at the edges. People often arrive at a turning point, a first house, a new job, a growing family, carrying a quiet hope that the new chapter will come with a new version of themselves.
Schema therapy explains why it often doesn't. Schemas are emotional templates formed early in life, beliefs such as 'people leave', 'I am not enough' or 'my needs come last', and they move house with you. A new neighbourhood simply gives an old pattern new rooms to appear in: the partner who withdraws, the manager whose silence feels like rejection, the renovation you cannot stop perfecting.
Schemas also shape the choices that brought you here. Someone with an abandonment schema may find themselves in a new subdivision with no friends nearby and a partner who works long hours, and experience ordinary absences as proof of the oldest fear. Someone with a subjugation schema may agree to the bigger house, the longer commute and the in-laws downstairs, and only feel the resentment years later.
Some pressures here are particular. Vaughan's low-income rate in the 2021 Census was 6.4%, less than half of Toronto's 13.2%, and in a place where so many people appear to be doing well, a schema of unrelenting standards can go unchallenged for years. So can the loyalties handed down in a city where close to half of residents were born in another country: in families that carried a migration story across generations, what a parent gave up quietly becomes what a child owes, and rest can feel like ingratitude.
In practice the work often starts with a moment from this week: the tightness you felt when a sibling mentioned a promotion, the evening spent cleaning a house that was already clean before guests arrived. Together you map which schema was switched on, which coping mode took over, striving, pleasing or withdrawing, and what the younger part of you needed at the time. Over months the aim is a steadier inner voice that notices the pull and chooses differently.
Ghazal Sheikhtaheri, Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), traces patterns to where they began so that change happens at the source rather than the surface. As an Iranian immigrant, she knows what it is to build a new life while an older one keeps speaking. Sessions are online, in English or Farsi, and weekly 60-minute sessions fit around a commute without adding one.
