About the Approach

What is Schema Therapy?

Schema therapy addresses the deep emotional patterns (called "schemas") formed in childhood that continue to shape your relationships, self-image, and reactions to stress. It goes beyond surface-level symptoms to work with the root causes, combining cognitive, emotional, and experiential techniques.

What to Expect

What Schema Therapy Looks Like in Practice

In the early phase, we work together to map out the core patterns, or schemas, that are shaping your life. This might include patterns like abandonment, emotional deprivation, self-sacrifice, or defectiveness. Most people recognise their patterns quickly once they have a framework for them.

From there, sessions move into deeper emotional work: understanding where these patterns formed, what needs went unmet, and how your coping strategies developed. Schema therapy uses a combination of cognitive techniques, chair work, imagery, and guided reflection to work with these patterns at both a thinking and feeling level.

Over time, the goal is to develop what schema therapists call the "Healthy Adult" mode: a stronger internal voice that can meet your own needs, set boundaries, and respond to old triggers differently.

Questions

Schema Therapy FAQ

What's the difference between schema therapy and CBT?
CBT focuses on changing thoughts and behaviours in the present. Schema therapy goes deeper. It addresses the childhood origins of your patterns and uses emotional and experiential techniques alongside cognitive ones. Many clients find schema therapy reaches places that CBT alone didn't.
How long does schema therapy take?
It depends on the complexity of your patterns. Some clients see meaningful shifts in 3-6 months. Deeper, more entrenched patterns may take longer. We'll discuss realistic expectations during your consultation.
Is schema therapy right for me?
If you notice recurring patterns in relationships, struggle with self-worth, or feel stuck despite previous therapy, schema therapy may be an excellent fit. A free consultation can help us determine this together.
Are sessions online?
Yes. All sessions are virtual and available in Scarborough and across Ontario.
Do you offer sessions in Farsi?
Yes. Sessions are available in Farsi (فارسی), English, or both.
As a newcomer settling in Scarborough, why do I keep feeling like I don't belong? Can schema therapy help?
That ache of not quite belonging is common, especially in a landing place for newcomers like Scarborough. Schema therapy looks at the early-rooted patterns, called schemas, that shape feelings of disconnection or self-doubt, and works to gently change them. Ghazal Sheikhtaheri, a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), CRPO #21300, and an Iranian immigrant herself, specializes in this approach. She works online with clients across Ontario in English and Farsi.
My parents sacrificed a lot to raise us in Scarborough, and I feel guilty whenever I put myself first. Is that something schema therapy works with?
Yes. Guilt about your own needs is often linked to the self-sacrifice and unrelenting-standards schemas, patterns that tend to form when a child senses how much the family is carrying. Schema therapy does not ask you to blame your parents. It helps you understand where the guilt comes from and build a way of caring for yourself that can sit alongside your love for them. Ghazal Sheikhtaheri, Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), works this way online, in English or Farsi.
I was the one who translated for my parents growing up. Why does asking for help still feel so hard?
Children who take on adult jobs early, translating, handling forms, looking after siblings, often learn that their own needs come second and that being capable is what keeps things steady. In schema therapy that can show up as the self-sacrifice or emotional-deprivation schemas. The work is not about regretting what you did for your family; it is about letting the adult you are now have the support the child never asked for. Sessions are online, in English or Farsi.

Scarborough

Schema therapy and the family's hopes

Many adults in Scarborough grew up in households where the parents had started over in a new country and asked a great deal of the future. Whether you were raised in Agincourt, L'Amoreaux or Scarborough Village, you may know the feeling of carrying the family's hopes before you knew what hope was. From the outside it can look like success, the degree, the steady job, the parents helped with the rent, while inside a voice insists that none of it is quite enough and that rest has to be earned first.

Schema therapy has words for these patterns. Unrelenting standards is the belief that you must always do more, and do it perfectly. Self-sacrifice is the reflex to put everyone else's needs first and feel guilty when you do not. Emotional inhibition is the habit of keeping feelings contained so that nobody worries. None of these is a flaw in a culture or a family. They formed as sensible responses to real pressure, and they tend to outlive the circumstances that created them.

Some people trace them to a specific role. The child who translated at the bank, the doctor's office and parent-teacher night at eleven or twelve often grows into the adult who is endlessly capable and cannot ask for anything. The eldest who looked after younger siblings while both parents worked may become the partner or employee who notices every need but their own. Schema therapy treats these roles with respect for why they were taken on, and with curiosity about what they cost.

Schemas also show up in ordinary days. An evening with nothing scheduled can feel unbearable, a compliment can feel like a trap, and a small mistake at work can echo for a week. Seeing these as the same old pattern, rather than a string of separate failures, is often the first relief.

The work follows a pattern back to where it began, then helps you meet the old need differently in the present, through imagery, chair work and a steadier inner voice that schema therapists call the Healthy Adult. Imagery and chair work can both be done by video, from a private room at home. Ghazal Sheikhtaheri, a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), makes schema therapy the centre of her practice, and knows from her own immigration from Iran how family expectation and love can arrive in the same sentence.

You do not need to be the child of immigrants for this to fit, and not everyone raised that way carries these patterns; they are simply ones many people recognize. Sessions are online, in English or Farsi, so you can do this work from home in Scarborough, and the community mental health services below are there if you need more support between sessions.
