About the Approach

What is Schema Therapy?

Schema therapy addresses the deep emotional patterns (called "schemas") formed in childhood that continue to shape your relationships, self-image, and reactions to stress. It goes beyond surface-level symptoms to work with the root causes, combining cognitive, emotional, and experiential techniques.

What to Expect

What Schema Therapy Looks Like in Practice

In the early phase, we work together to map out the core patterns, or schemas, that are shaping your life. This might include patterns like abandonment, emotional deprivation, self-sacrifice, or defectiveness. Most people recognise their patterns quickly once they have a framework for them.

From there, sessions move into deeper emotional work: understanding where these patterns formed, what needs went unmet, and how your coping strategies developed. Schema therapy uses a combination of cognitive techniques, chair work, imagery, and guided reflection to work with these patterns at both a thinking and feeling level.

Over time, the goal is to develop what schema therapists call the "Healthy Adult" mode: a stronger internal voice that can meet your own needs, set boundaries, and respond to old triggers differently.

Questions

Schema Therapy FAQ

What's the difference between schema therapy and CBT?
CBT focuses on changing thoughts and behaviours in the present. Schema therapy goes deeper. It addresses the childhood origins of your patterns and uses emotional and experiential techniques alongside cognitive ones. Many clients find schema therapy reaches places that CBT alone didn't.
How long does schema therapy take?
It depends on the complexity of your patterns. Some clients see meaningful shifts in 3-6 months. Deeper, more entrenched patterns may take longer. We'll discuss realistic expectations during your consultation.
Is schema therapy right for me?
If you notice recurring patterns in relationships, struggle with self-worth, or feel stuck despite previous therapy, schema therapy may be an excellent fit. A free consultation can help us determine this together.
Are sessions online?
Yes. All sessions are virtual and available in Ajax and across Ontario.
Do you offer sessions in Farsi?
Yes. Sessions are available in Farsi (فارسی), English, or both.
I hold everything together for my family in Ajax and still feel it's never enough. Is that a schema?
It may be. The feeling that nothing you do is enough often links to schemas such as unrelenting standards, self-sacrifice or defectiveness, which usually formed long before your current responsibilities. Schema therapy looks at where the pattern began and what it protects, then works on responding to it differently. Ghazal Sheikhtaheri, a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), CRPO #21300, specializes in this approach and offers online sessions across Ontario in English and Farsi. The free consultation is a chance to talk about whether it fits.
I live with extended family in Ajax. How do I keep online sessions private?
It is worth planning, because schema work goes to personal places. People use a room with the door closed and headphones, a fan or white noise outside the door, or a regular time when the house is quieter. If privacy at home is hard to find, mention it in your free consultation and you can work out a time that fits. What you say in sessions stays confidential, within the limits required by law that are explained at the start.
Can I get started from Ajax before my first session with Ghazal?
Yes. You can book a free 15-minute consultation now; Ghazal is currently booking by waitlist, with new clients typically starting in 3–4 weeks. Before your first session it can help to jot down moments when you reacted more strongly than the situation seemed to call for, or when an old feeling of not being good enough flared up. Those notes often become the starting point for mapping your schemas. Sessions are online, in English or Farsi.

Ajax

Schema therapy for Ajax: where old patterns come from

Ajax wears its history on its street signs. The town grew out of a Second World War munitions plant, Defence Industries Limited's Pickering Works, and took its name from HMS Ajax, the Royal Navy ship that fought at the Battle of the River Plate in 1939. Many streets carry the names of that ship's officers and crew; Harwood Avenue is named after Admiral Henry Harwood. After the war, from 1946 to 1949, the old plant site even housed a University of Toronto engineering division for returning veterans. Most people drive those roads every day without a thought for where the names came from. Schemas work in much the same way.

A schema is a pattern laid down early, usually in childhood, about what to expect from other people and from yourself: that you will be left, that you have to earn your place, that your needs come last. By adulthood it runs in the background like a street name you no longer notice. It shapes who you are drawn to, how you react to criticism at work, why rest feels undeserved and why the same argument keeps coming back in different clothes.

Some schemas fit neatly with the demands of a busy life. Unrelenting standards can pass for diligence when you are juggling a job, a commute and a full house. Self-sacrifice can pass for being a good son, daughter or parent when family expectations are close at hand every day. The pattern is not a character flaw, and it usually made sense once. The cost shows up later: exhaustion, resentment, a sense that nothing you do is ever quite enough, or relationships that repeat the same hurt with different people.

Ajax's own story offers a way to picture this. The munitions plant was built for an emergency; when the emergency ended, the community stayed, kept the names, and grew into a town of more than 126,000 people by 2021. Coping strategies work the same way. They are built for an emergency in childhood, kept long after it has passed, and go on shaping a life that has grown far larger than the conditions that produced them. In schema terms you might notice a Demanding Critic that never lets up, or a Compliant Surrenderer who keeps the peace at your own expense.

Ghazal Sheikhtaheri, Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), trained in schema therapy at CASMH Health Institute in Germany and uses it as the foundation of her work. Together you map which schemas are running, where they started and what they protect, then use imagery, chair work and practice between sessions to strengthen a steadier Healthy Adult voice. Sessions are online, in English or Farsi, for people anywhere in Ajax and across Ontario.
