About the Approach

What is Schema Therapy?

Schema therapy addresses the deep emotional patterns (called "schemas") formed in childhood that continue to shape your relationships, self-image, and reactions to stress. It goes beyond surface-level symptoms to work with the root causes, combining cognitive, emotional, and experiential techniques.

What to Expect

What Schema Therapy Looks Like in Practice

In the early phase, we work together to map out the core patterns, or schemas, that are shaping your life. This might include patterns like abandonment, emotional deprivation, self-sacrifice, or defectiveness. Most people recognise their patterns quickly once they have a framework for them.

From there, sessions move into deeper emotional work: understanding where these patterns formed, what needs went unmet, and how your coping strategies developed. Schema therapy uses a combination of cognitive techniques, chair work, imagery, and guided reflection to work with these patterns at both a thinking and feeling level.

Over time, the goal is to develop what schema therapists call the "Healthy Adult" mode: a stronger internal voice that can meet your own needs, set boundaries, and respond to old triggers differently.

Questions

Schema Therapy FAQ

What's the difference between schema therapy and CBT?
CBT focuses on changing thoughts and behaviours in the present. Schema therapy goes deeper. It addresses the childhood origins of your patterns and uses emotional and experiential techniques alongside cognitive ones. Many clients find schema therapy reaches places that CBT alone didn't.
How long does schema therapy take?
It depends on the complexity of your patterns. Some clients see meaningful shifts in 3-6 months. Deeper, more entrenched patterns may take longer. We'll discuss realistic expectations during your consultation.
Is schema therapy right for me?
If you notice recurring patterns in relationships, struggle with self-worth, or feel stuck despite previous therapy, schema therapy may be an excellent fit. A free consultation can help us determine this together.
Are sessions online?
Yes. All sessions are virtual and available in Pickering and across Ontario.
Do you offer sessions in Farsi?
Yes. Sessions are available in Farsi (فارسی), English, or both.
I work in a safety-critical job in Pickering and I'm the one everyone relies on. Could schema therapy help me stop over-functioning?
It can help you understand why you over-function in the first place. Patterns such as unrelenting standards and self-sacrifice often start early and are later rewarded at work and at home, which makes them hard to change through willpower alone. Schema therapy traces them to their roots and builds a steadier way of meeting your own needs. Ghazal Sheikhtaheri specializes in this approach as a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), CRPO #21300, and offers sessions online in English and Farsi.
Can I do schema therapy online from Pickering around a rotating shift schedule?
Yes. All sessions are online, so you can book times through Jane that fit your rotation, including evenings where they are available. Schema therapy is usually weekly, so it helps to find a time you can protect most weeks; if your schedule rotates, raise it in the free consultation so you can plan a rhythm that holds.

Pickering

Schema therapy for Pickering and the dependable one

One of Pickering's major employers is Ontario Power Generation's nuclear station on the lakeshore, where the work runs on procedure, precision and never cutting a corner. Plenty of other work asks for the same things, on hospital wards and in transit, utilities, the trades and finance. Show up, get it right, don't let anyone down. Those are real strengths. For some people, though, reliability stops being something they do and becomes who they are, and it is no longer optional.

Schema therapy has names for the patterns underneath that shift. Unrelenting standards: the belief that anything less than excellent is failure. Self-sacrifice: meeting everyone else's needs first, then feeling invisible. Emotional inhibition: keeping feelings tightly controlled because showing them feels unsafe or unprofessional. These schemas usually form early, often in families where love felt conditional on being good, capable or no trouble, and they are rewarded later by workplaces and families that value the person who never falters.

The cost tends to show up in private. Rest feels undeserved. Mild criticism lands like a verdict. Relationships feel one-sided because asking for help was never part of the plan. Holidays are spent checking email, and illness is something to push through rather than rest from. The drive home on the 401 becomes the only time you are alone with your thoughts, and they are rarely kind. Some people notice it most when the structure around them changes, a new role, a reorganization, children leaving home, and the pattern that used to feel like competence starts to feel like a trap.

None of this means lowering your standards or caring less about the people who depend on you. It means that your reliability becomes a choice rather than a compulsion, and that you are, now and then, one of the people you look after. One surprise of schema work can be how young the rule feels once it is traced back: a child who learned that being helpful was the safest way to be loved.

Schema therapy works with those patterns directly. Together you trace where they started, what they were protecting you from, and which modes take over under pressure, such as a Demanding Critic that keeps raising the bar or a Detached Protector that shuts feelings down to keep you functioning. Through imagery, chair work and small experiments between sessions, the aim is a Healthy Adult side that can hold high standards without being ruled by them.

Ghazal Sheikhtaheri, Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), uses schema therapy as the foundation of her work, drawing on advanced training at CASMH Health Institute in Germany, together with attachment- and emotion-focused methods. Sessions are online, in English or Farsi, for people anywhere in Pickering and across Ontario.
