About the Approach

What is Schema Therapy?

Schema therapy addresses the deep emotional patterns — called "schemas" — formed in childhood that continue to shape your relationships, self-image, and reactions to stress. It goes beyond surface-level symptoms to work with the root causes, combining cognitive, emotional, and experiential techniques.

What to Expect

What Schema Therapy Looks Like in Practice

In the early phase, we work together to map out the core patterns — or schemas — that are shaping your life. This might include patterns like abandonment, emotional deprivation, self-sacrifice, or defectiveness. Most people recognise their patterns quickly once they have a framework for them.

From there, sessions move into deeper emotional work — understanding where these patterns formed, what needs went unmet, and how your coping strategies developed. Schema therapy uses a combination of cognitive techniques, chair work, imagery, and guided reflection to work with these patterns at both a thinking and feeling level.

Over time, the goal is to develop what schema therapists call the "Healthy Adult" mode — a stronger internal voice that can meet your own needs, set boundaries, and respond to old triggers differently.

Questions

Schema Therapy FAQ

What's the difference between schema therapy and CBT?
CBT focuses on changing thoughts and behaviours in the present. Schema therapy goes deeper — it addresses the childhood origins of your patterns and uses emotional and experiential techniques alongside cognitive ones. Many clients find schema therapy reaches places that CBT alone didn't.
How long does schema therapy take?
It depends on the complexity of your patterns. Some clients see meaningful shifts in 3-6 months. Deeper, more entrenched patterns may take longer. We'll discuss realistic expectations during your consultation.
Is schema therapy right for me?
If you notice recurring patterns in relationships, struggle with self-worth, or feel stuck despite previous therapy, schema therapy may be an excellent fit. A free consultation can help us determine this together.
Are sessions online?
Yes — all sessions are virtual and available in Barrie and across Ontario.
Do you offer sessions in Farsi?
Yes — sessions are available in Farsi (فارسی), English, or both.
With one of Ontario's longest commutes from Barrie, I feel drained and stuck in old patterns. How does schema therapy help?
Barrie offers lake life and four-season recreation, but some of the province's longest commutes can leave you drained and cycling through old patterns. Schema therapy identifies these early-rooted themes, called schemas, and helps you understand and shift them. Ghazal Sheikhtaheri specializes in this approach and is a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), CRPO #21300. She offers sessions online across Ontario in English and Farsi, no extra drive required.

Barrie

Schema Therapy for Barrie residents

On a clear morning Kempenfelt Bay can make Barrie look like a place that has nothing to prove. The lake, the seasons, the gateway to cottage country, all of it suggests ease. And yet a great many people here spend some of the longest hours in the province on the highway south, trading the calm of the water for the strain of the commute, and arriving home with little left over. That recurring depletion has a way of feeding patterns that were already there, the ones that tell you to push harder or that you are somehow falling short.

Schema therapy works with precisely those recurring patterns. A schema is a deeply held belief about yourself that formed early, often in childhood, and now repeats across very different parts of your life. The conviction that you must keep everyone afloat, or that slowing down means failing, can feel like character when it is really an old script. People search for the exhaustion or the resentment they feel, not for the method, and the method simply helps locate the root.

Ghazal Sheikhtaheri, a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), works to follow a present pattern back to its early origins so that it can actually change rather than merely be endured. Schema therapy is her central approach, paired with attachment- and emotion-focused work that keeps the process gentle and real.

Because everything is virtual, there is no extra drive to add to an already long day. You can meet from anywhere in Barrie or across Ontario, in English or in Farsi.
