Sound Familiar?

What brings Iranian couples to therapy.

I.

The same argument on repeat

You keep having the same argument, but underneath it is something cultural that a non-Iranian therapist wouldn’t recognize.

II.

A growing cultural gap

One of you has adapted more to Canadian culture than the other, and that gap is pulling you apart.

III.

Family involvement that never stops

Family involvement in your marriage feels constant, and setting boundaries feels like betrayal.

IV.

Your parents’ communication style

You love each other, but you communicate the way your parents did, and it’s not working.

V.

Impossible expectations

Expectations around gender roles, money, parenting, or in-laws feel impossible to negotiate without someone getting hurt.

VI.

Too much gets lost in English

You’ve thought about couples therapy before, but couldn’t imagine doing it in English. Too much gets lost.

You don't need to fix everything before you call. Start with a conversation, in whichever language the two of you argue in.

What Iranian Couples Bring to Therapy

Every relationship is different, but here's what we consistently work with.

Cultural gaps within the relationship

One partner adapted more to Canadian norms, the other holds Iranian values. Neither is wrong, but the gap creates daily friction.

Extended family pressure

Marriage is not private in many Iranian families. Setting boundaries can feel like abandoning your culture.

Communication patterns inherited from your family of origin

Silence, explosion, guilt, avoidance from your parents' home becomes your own pattern. Schema Therapy traces these to their origin.

The strain of immigration on a marriage

Roles shift, financial pressure increases, social networks shrink. These are structural pressures, not personal failures. For couples whose status in Canada depends on one partner's degree or job, the imbalance can quietly become part of the marriage.

Premarital concerns

For couples approaching marriage, especially when families are involved, premarital therapy helps align expectations honestly.

FAQ

Farsi couples therapy: what people ask before they book.

Can we do therapy in Farsi even if my partner doesn’t speak it?
Yes, sessions flow in both languages.
Will our families find out?
No. Sessions are confidential under CRPO standards, with limits required by law: for example, risk of serious harm, suspected child abuse or neglect, sexual abuse by a regulated health professional, or a court order. We review these limits with you at the start.
We're both connected to McMaster, one of us as a grad student. Can we fit couples therapy around research and teaching?
Yes. Sessions are online, so you can join from home or any private room, and evening times are available around labs and teaching. Couples therapy with Ghazal Sheikhtaheri, Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), Tina Abadi, RP, or Roya Dadollahi Sarab, RP, is available in Farsi, English or both. Couples sessions are $225 for 60 minutes or $350 for 90, and receipts are provided after every session for a student or workplace health plan; Ghazal holds the Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) designation, so please confirm your plan covers it.
Our families are all in Iran, and we lean on each other for everything. Can couples therapy help with that?
It can. Distance from family works in two directions: less interference, and less support. Couples in this position can end up asking one relationship to carry everything a wider family once shared, from advice and reassurance to help with children and company on hard days. Couples therapy helps you notice where that pressure shows up and build a steadier way of supporting each other. Sessions are online, from home in Hamilton, in Farsi, English or both.

Farsi couples therapy for Iranian couples in Hamilton

Hamilton's Iranian community is small but organized. The Iranian Culture & Social Association of Hamilton runs cultural and social events, and at McMaster the Iranian Students' Association holds cultural events while the Iranian Graduate Student Society marks Nowruz and Yalda Night. Persian is not among the city's most common home languages, though, so many Iranian couples here live in mixed worlds: Farsi at home and with a few close friends, English at work, at the university and with the neighbours.

Many of those connections run through McMaster. Some graduate students and early-career researchers arrive as young couples, sometimes newly married and far from both families. Academic deadlines, funding that ends on a fixed date and immigration timelines can land on a relationship that has had little time to find its footing. When one partner came for a degree and the other came for the partner, the difference in purpose and in social life can quietly become the thing you argue about.

Other couples have been in Hamilton for years, raising children who speak English with their friends and Farsi, or less and less of it, with their grandparents on video calls. Questions of how Iranian your home should feel, and who gets to decide, can sit underneath arguments that seem to be about something else entirely.

Some couples come before the wedding, when families on two continents have different ideas about the ceremony, the money and where the two of you will live. Premarital sessions give you a place to agree on what matters to you first, before the relatives weigh in.

Ghazal Sheikhtaheri, Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), CRPO #21300, grew up in Iran and immigrated to Canada. She works with Emotionally Focused Therapy and Schema Therapy to reach beneath the recurring argument, whether it is about in-laws, money, gender roles or the pull between two cultures. If one of you is not Iranian, that is no obstacle: a session can run mostly in English and switch to Farsi when a feeling needs its own words.

Much of Ontario's Persian-speaking community life is centred in Toronto and Richmond Hill; in Richmond Hill alone, about one resident in ten had Persian as a mother tongue in 2021. Online sessions mean you do not have to make that drive each week to work with a therapist who shares your language and culture. You meet from home in Hamilton, at a time that works around classes, shifts or children. Answers to the questions most couples ask before they start are on the Ontario Farsi couples therapy page.
