Milton has grown faster than almost any town in the country, its new subdivisions filling with young families who chose this corner near the Niagara Escarpment for room to begin. But the daily commute into Mississauga and Toronto is long, and the early years of a marriage can pass in a blur of handoffs and tiredness, where two people share a home without quite reaching one another. For partners with Persian or Iranian roots, the strain often runs deeper than the schedule.
So much of what wears on a couple is never argued about directly. There are the expectations carried from Iran about gender roles and duty, the question of in-laws and how much a marriage belongs to the wider family rather than to the two people inside it, and the heavy silences around subjects that were never spoken of at home. In Farsi or in English, Ghazal Sheikhtaheri, who immigrated from Iran herself, works with couples to name these inherited rules and decide, together, which ones they want to keep and which they are free to set down.
