The same argument on repeat
You keep having the same argument, but underneath it is something cultural that a non-Iranian therapist wouldn’t recognize.
In a city where Farsi-speaking couples therapy can be hard to find locally, you shouldn’t have to explain your culture before you can talk about your relationship. Ghazal already understands, because she’s lived it. Tina and Roya both bring Emotionally Focused Therapy, in the same two languages. English + Farsi فارسی · Online across Ontario.
Both partners are welcome on the free 15-minute call, or just one. Tina and Roya are booking now; Ghazal is booking by waitlist (3–4 weeks).
You keep having the same argument, but underneath it is something cultural that a non-Iranian therapist wouldn’t recognize.
One of you has adapted more to Canadian culture than the other, and that gap is pulling you apart.
Family involvement in your marriage feels constant, and setting boundaries feels like betrayal.
You love each other, but you communicate the way your parents did, and it’s not working.
Expectations around gender roles, money, parenting, or in-laws feel impossible to negotiate without someone getting hurt.
You’ve thought about couples therapy before, but couldn’t imagine doing it in English. Too much gets lost, and in Guelph, finding someone to do it with you in Farsi seemed unlikely.
You don't need to fix everything before you call. Start with a conversation.

One partner adapted more to Canadian norms, the other holds Iranian values. Neither is wrong, but the gap creates daily friction.
Marriage is not private in many Iranian families. Setting boundaries can feel like abandoning your culture.
Silence, explosion, guilt, avoidance from your parents' home becomes your own pattern. Schema Therapy traces these to their origin.
Roles shift, financial pressure increases, social networks shrink. These are structural pressures, not personal failures.
For couples approaching marriage, especially when families are involved, premarital therapy helps align expectations honestly, including when one family is in Guelph and the other is overseas.
Talk about what's happening in your relationship. Both partners welcome or just one.
Identify the negative interaction pattern: pursue-withdraw, attack-attack, or whatever keeps repeating.
60-minute sessions turning toward each other instead of away.

Whether you're in Guelph, Wellington County or anywhere else in Ontario, Ghazal provides culturally sensitive, evidence-based couples therapy in Farsi and English, and Tina and Roya offer Emotionally Focused couples work in the same two languages, so a smaller local Iranian community doesn't have to mean going without.

Other specialties:
Guelph is its own city, a single-tier municipality that sits inside Wellington County on the map but is separate from it for local government, and it is not part of Waterloo Region. For Persian couples that has one practical consequence: the nearest organized Iranian community groups we know of, such as the Iranian Community of Waterloo Region, are across that boundary in Kitchener-Waterloo, and we are not aware of a Persian association based in Guelph itself. The Iranians who live here, including students and academics who moved for their work, form a small and scattered community.
Guelph also has a lower share of immigrants than Ontario overall. For a bicultural couple, one partner raised in an Iranian family and one not, that can mean the Iranian partner has almost no one nearby who shares the references that shape how they love, argue and apologize. The other partner may want to understand and simply not know where to begin. Sessions that move between English and Farsi let both of you stay inside the conversation, and give the Iranian partner access to the words that only exist in one language.
When both partners are Iranian, the pressures often come from far away as well as close to home: parents in Iran with opinions about the marriage, expectations about roles that made sense somewhere else, and the shared strain of building a life in a new place. Small communities add one more layer. When everyone knows everyone, it can feel safer to say nothing at all than to risk a relationship problem becoming a topic of conversation.
For couples who came for graduate study or an academic post, the relationship may also be carrying uncertainty: a contract that ends, a permit that must be renewed, a decision about whether to stay in Canada or go back. Choices like these reach families on both sides and can pull partners in different directions, often without either of them saying so directly.
Ghazal Sheikhtaheri, who came to Canada from Iran herself, uses Emotionally Focused Therapy to map the cycle you fall into when you feel disconnected, and Schema Therapy to trace where each partner’s strongest reactions began. Couples who would like a more structured approach can also work with Tina Abadi, RP, who offers Emotionally Focused Therapy in both languages. Roya Dadollahi Sarab, RP, also offers Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples in Farsi and English. Because sessions are online, finding a Farsi-speaking couples therapist no longer means a trip down Highway 6 and the 401, and there is no waiting room where you might meet someone you know.
As a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), CRPO #21300, Ghazal offers all sessions online, serving Guelph and anywhere in Ontario, in English and in Farsi.
