Workplace stress isn't just about a demanding job. It's about what gets activated inside you when work becomes overwhelming: the deep emotional patterns that were formed long before your current role.
From a schema therapy perspective, burnout often has roots in childhood. The need to constantly prove your worth. The belief that rest means laziness. The fear that saying no will lead to rejection. People-pleasing that began in your family and now plays out with bosses and colleagues. These aren't just "bad habits." They're survival strategies that once made sense but are now running your life.
For immigrant professionals, workplace stress carries additional layers. You may be navigating credential recognition battles, cultural adjustment, language barriers, or the relentless pressure to prove yourself in a country that doesn't always see your full capability. The exhaustion of code-switching, the isolation of being the "different one" on your team, the grief of a career that looks nothing like what you built back home.
This isn't about learning five tips to manage stress. It's about understanding why you're vulnerable to burnout in the first place, and about doing the deeper therapeutic work that creates lasting change.

A good share of Vaughan's working life happens away from a desk. In the 2021 Census, trades, transport and equipment operators made up about 13.9% of the city's labour force, compared with 11.6% in Toronto. Work of that kind often means early starts, physical strain and schedules that change with the job, and it carries its own stress: a body that takes the wear, the pressure to keep a crew on schedule, income that depends on the next contract.
Commuting adds to it. Even in the 2021 Census, gathered during the pandemic, 8.7% of Vaughan commuters spent an hour or more getting to work, one way, and the large majority drove. Two hours a day behind the wheel is time you cannot rest or recover in, and by the time you get home there is little left for the people waiting for you.
Then there are the people for whom work never ends: owners of small and family businesses, self-employed contractors, the person everyone calls when something breaks. For them burnout rarely arrives as a crash. It arrives as irritability, poor sleep, a sense that rest has to be earned and a belief that saying no will cost everything. Schema therapy looks beneath that belief, at patterns such as unrelenting standards or self-sacrifice that often began long before the job.
Some workers carry a further weight. In 2021, 1.9% of Vaughan residents were non-permanent residents, a group that includes people on work and study permits, for whom a job can feel tied to the right to stay. When so much rides on one employer, it is hard to object to unsafe hours or a hostile manager, and the strain tends to be carried in silence, sometimes for years. Vaughan's measured low-income rate is modest, 6.4% in 2021, but a comfortable-looking street can still hold households where someone is working two jobs to keep up with the mortgage, and where exhaustion is treated as the price of staying.
The work is not about quitting, and it is not a list of coping tips. Early sessions map the pattern as it actually runs: the site supervisor who cannot delegate, the office manager answering messages at 11 p.m., the owner who has not taken a full week off in years. From there you trace why stopping feels dangerous and practise limits that hold up on an ordinary Tuesday.
Ghazal Sheikhtaheri, Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), CRPO #21300, combines schema therapy, CBT and emotion-focused techniques, and understands the extra layer many immigrant workers carry: credentials that did not transfer, the pressure to prove yourself twice. Sessions are online and 60 minutes, in English or Farsi, so therapy does not become one more drive.
