Beyond Coping Strategies

Understanding workplace stress at its roots

Workplace stress isn't just about a demanding job. It's about what gets activated inside you when work becomes overwhelming — the deep emotional patterns that were formed long before your current role.

From a schema therapy perspective, burnout often has roots in childhood. The need to constantly prove your worth. The belief that rest means laziness. The fear that saying no will lead to rejection. People-pleasing that began in your family and now plays out with bosses and colleagues. These aren't just "bad habits" — they're survival strategies that once made sense but are now running your life.

For immigrant professionals, workplace stress carries additional layers. You may be navigating credential recognition battles, cultural adjustment, language barriers, or the relentless pressure to prove yourself in a country that doesn't always see your full capability. The exhaustion of code-switching, the isolation of being the "different one" on your team, the grief of a career that looks nothing like what you built back home.

This isn't about learning five tips to manage stress. It's about understanding why you're vulnerable to burnout in the first place — and doing the deeper therapeutic work that creates lasting change.

Questions

Common questions

How is this different from stress management coaching?
Coaching typically focuses on strategies and productivity — time management, boundaries, delegation. This is psychotherapy. We go deeper, exploring the emotional patterns formed early in life that make you vulnerable to burnout, people-pleasing, and overwork. We use schema therapy, CBT, and emotion-focused techniques to create lasting change, not just temporary relief.
I'm not sure my problem is "serious enough" for therapy. Is it?
If work stress is affecting your sleep, your relationships, your health, or your sense of self — that's serious enough. You don't need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. In fact, addressing these patterns before they escalate is one of the most effective things you can do.
Do you work with people from specific industries?
I work with professionals across all industries — tech, healthcare, finance, education, law, non-profit, and more. Workplace stress takes different forms in different settings, but the underlying emotional patterns are often similar. I also have particular experience working with immigrant professionals navigating the added complexity of building careers in a new country.
Does insurance cover workplace stress therapy?
Many extended health insurance plans in Ontario cover sessions with a Registered Psychotherapist. I provide official receipts after each session for insurance claims. Check with your insurance provider about your specific coverage.
Are sessions online?
Yes — all sessions are virtual and available to anyone in Etobicoke and across Ontario. Many clients find that online sessions actually make therapy more accessible, especially when work schedules are demanding.
Do you offer sessions in Farsi?
Yes — sessions are available in Farsi (فارسی), English, or both. Emotional processing is often more effective in your first language.
I commute to the airport employment zone and feel burned out. Does therapy work for someone in Etobicoke?
It can. Etobicoke workers often commute downtown or to the airport-area pharma, logistics and manufacturing jobs, where the pace adds up. Ghazal Sheikhtaheri, a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), CRPO #21300, offers virtual sessions in English and Farsi across Ontario, with evening options. Because everything is online, you can meet from your quieter Etobicoke neighbourhood and use the time to address stress rather than sit in more traffic.

Etobicoke

Workplace Stress Therapy for Etobicoke residents

Etobicoke spreads out quietly toward the lake and the airport, more residential and more spacious than the city's dense core. Its workers move outward and inward at once, commuting downtown or into the airport employment zone, where pharma, logistics and manufacturing keep their own demanding hours. The car-oriented calm of the neighbourhoods can mask how stretched people actually are, the long drives bookending days that ask for steady output and offer little in return.

When the pressure of work follows you home into that quiet, it can feel especially disorienting. You expected the suburb to be the place you recover, and instead the dread simply changes setting. Toxic dynamics at work, a manager who withholds, a culture of more with less, lodge themselves in the body and do not switch off in the driveway. Burnout in a place built for family life often carries an extra weight of guilt, because you are tired in the very space meant for the people you love.

Rather than handing you techniques to manage the symptoms, I want to understand what makes the workplace so hard to put down. Using schema therapy and attachment- and emotion-focused approaches, we look at the patterns that keep you over-giving, over-accommodating, or bracing for criticism that may not even come. Beneath the exhaustion there is usually an old agreement about how much you must tolerate to be safe. That agreement can be examined, and gently rewritten.

I am Ghazal Sheikhtaheri, a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), CRPO #21300. All sessions are virtual, serving Etobicoke and anywhere in Ontario, in English and Farsi.
