About the Approach

What is Schema Therapy?

Schema therapy addresses the deep emotional patterns (called "schemas") formed in childhood that continue to shape your relationships, self-image, and reactions to stress. It goes beyond surface-level symptoms to work with the root causes, combining cognitive, emotional, and experiential techniques.

What to Expect

What Schema Therapy Looks Like in Practice

In the early phase, we work together to map out the core patterns, or schemas, that are shaping your life. This might include patterns like abandonment, emotional deprivation, self-sacrifice, or defectiveness. Most people recognise their patterns quickly once they have a framework for them.

From there, sessions move into deeper emotional work: understanding where these patterns formed, what needs went unmet, and how your coping strategies developed. Schema therapy uses a combination of cognitive techniques, chair work, imagery, and guided reflection to work with these patterns at both a thinking and feeling level.

Over time, the goal is to develop what schema therapists call the "Healthy Adult" mode: a stronger internal voice that can meet your own needs, set boundaries, and respond to old triggers differently.

Questions

Schema Therapy FAQ

What's the difference between schema therapy and CBT?
CBT focuses on changing thoughts and behaviours in the present. Schema therapy goes deeper. It addresses the childhood origins of your patterns and uses emotional and experiential techniques alongside cognitive ones. Many clients find schema therapy reaches places that CBT alone didn't.
How long does schema therapy take?
It depends on the complexity of your patterns. Some clients see meaningful shifts in 3-6 months. Deeper, more entrenched patterns may take longer. We'll discuss realistic expectations during your consultation.
Is schema therapy right for me?
If you notice recurring patterns in relationships, struggle with self-worth, or feel stuck despite previous therapy, schema therapy may be an excellent fit. A free consultation can help us determine this together.
Are sessions online?
Yes. All sessions are virtual and available in Cambridge and across Ontario.
Do you offer sessions in Farsi?
Yes. Sessions are available in Farsi (فارسی), English, or both.
I'm the reliable one at work and at home in Cambridge, and I'm running on empty. Could that be a schema?
It might be. Patterns such as self-sacrifice, unrelenting standards or keeping emotions to yourself often feel like character rather than something learned. Schema therapy helps you see where a pattern started, what it protected you from, and what it costs now, then works on changing it. Ghazal Sheikhtaheri, a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), CRPO #21300, uses schema therapy as her primary framework and offers sessions online throughout Ontario in English and Farsi.
Schema therapy is weekly and longer-term. Is that realistic around a Cambridge shift schedule?
It can be. The work usually runs in weekly 60-minute sessions over months rather than weeks. Meeting online takes travel out of the equation, which helps when a rotation changes, and you can raise your schedule in the free consultation so the two of you can look at what is workable before you commit.

Schema therapy for Cambridge: patterns that outlast their purpose

Cambridge was created on January 1, 1973, when Galt, Preston, Hespeler and the village of Blair were joined into one city. Half a century later the three old cores still feel distinct, each with its own historic downtown, and Galt’s nineteenth-century stone buildings still line the Grand River. Places keep their early shape long after the reasons for it have changed. People do too. In Preston the Speed River runs into the Grand and the two become a single current, and a pattern from childhood can merge with a present-day relationship in much the same way, until it is hard to tell which one is doing the pulling.

That is the idea at the heart of schema therapy. A schema is a pattern learned early, often in childhood, about what you need to do to be safe, loved or acceptable. It made sense in the setting that formed it. Carried into adult life, it can keep running long after it stopped helping: the belief that your needs come last, that feelings should stay private, that rest has to be earned.

In workplaces that prize getting the job done, and a manufacturing city has many of them, those patterns can pass for strengths. The person who never asks for help gets called reliable. The one who takes every extra shift gets called a team player. Schema therapy doesn’t argue with those qualities. It asks what they cost you, where they came from, and whether you still have a choice about them.

Patterns also travel through families. A parent who worked double shifts to keep the house running may have taught, without ever saying it, that tiredness is not discussed and that love looks like provision. Children absorb lessons like that long before they can question them. Schema therapy can hold gratitude for what a parent gave alongside honest grief for what was missing, without having to choose between the two.

Schema therapy also pays attention to modes, the states you shift into when a schema is triggered. There is the Detached Protector that goes numb after a double shift, the Demanding Critic that replays every mistake on the drive home, and the Vulnerable Child who feels alone in a full house. Naming a mode is often the first moment someone realizes the reaction is older than the situation, and that it can be met differently.

Ghazal Sheikhtaheri, a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), uses schema therapy as her main framework, alongside attachment- and emotion-focused work. Sessions move at a pace that lets an old pattern be understood before anyone asks it to change, using imagery, chair work and plain conversation about what actually happened in your week.

Because every session is online, you can take part from anywhere in Cambridge or elsewhere in Ontario, in English or Farsi.
