About the Approach

What is Schema Therapy?

Schema therapy addresses the deep emotional patterns (called "schemas") formed in childhood that continue to shape your relationships, self-image, and reactions to stress. It goes beyond surface-level symptoms to work with the root causes, combining cognitive, emotional, and experiential techniques.

What to Expect

What Schema Therapy Looks Like in Practice

In the early phase, we work together to map out the core patterns, or schemas, that are shaping your life. This might include patterns like abandonment, emotional deprivation, self-sacrifice, or defectiveness. Most people recognise their patterns quickly once they have a framework for them.

From there, sessions move into deeper emotional work: understanding where these patterns formed, what needs went unmet, and how your coping strategies developed. Schema therapy uses a combination of cognitive techniques, chair work, imagery, and guided reflection to work with these patterns at both a thinking and feeling level.

Over time, the goal is to develop what schema therapists call the "Healthy Adult" mode: a stronger internal voice that can meet your own needs, set boundaries, and respond to old triggers differently.

Questions

Schema Therapy FAQ

What's the difference between schema therapy and CBT?
CBT focuses on changing thoughts and behaviours in the present. Schema therapy goes deeper. It addresses the childhood origins of your patterns and uses emotional and experiential techniques alongside cognitive ones. Many clients find schema therapy reaches places that CBT alone didn't.
How long does schema therapy take?
It depends on the complexity of your patterns. Some clients see meaningful shifts in 3-6 months. Deeper, more entrenched patterns may take longer. We'll discuss realistic expectations during your consultation.
Is schema therapy right for me?
If you notice recurring patterns in relationships, struggle with self-worth, or feel stuck despite previous therapy, schema therapy may be an excellent fit. A free consultation can help us determine this together.
Are sessions online?
Yes. All sessions are virtual and available in Kitchener and across Ontario.
Do you offer sessions in Farsi?
Yes. Sessions are available in Farsi (فارسی), English, or both.
My life in Kitchener looks stable, but I keep repeating the same patterns. Is that what schema therapy is for?
Often, yes. Schema therapy is designed for patterns that persist even when circumstances improve: the same kind of relationship, the same inner critic, the same exhaustion after saying yes to everything. Early sessions map which schemas are active and where they began. Ghazal Sheikhtaheri, Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), offers schema therapy online in English or Farsi.
Can I do schema therapy from Kitchener if I work rotating shifts?
Yes. Sessions are online, so there is no travel time to plan around, and the free 15-minute consultation is a good place to work out how regular 60-minute sessions could fit your rotation.

Kitchener

Schema therapy in a city that keeps changing

Kitchener has changed quickly. The ION light rail started running in June 2019, linking Fairview Park Mall with Conestoga Mall in Waterloo, and the city added about 23,700 residents between the 2016 and 2021 censuses. It is still a manufacturing city, and it has added technology work alongside the factories and trades. For many people the landscape of daily life, the commute, the neighbourhood, the kind of job on offer, looks different from how it did a decade ago.

Change on the outside doesn't always reach the inside. You can move into a new neighbourhood, take a job at a software company or step into a supervisor role on the plant floor, and still find the same reactions waiting: the dread of disappointing someone, the conviction that you're only as good as your last result, the habit of saying yes and resenting it later. In schema therapy these are called schemas, deep beliefs formed early in life that fire automatically when the present feels emotionally like the past.

Schemas often surface at transitions. For some people in Kitchener that is a first full-time job after college or university; for others it is becoming a parent without family nearby, a move from another country, or the first promotion into a role where the work is managing people rather than doing the task. The circumstances are new. The feeling, of being on trial or about to be left behind, is old.

Coping modes have local faces too. On a plant floor, overcompensation can look like never taking a sick day; in a tech office, like answering messages at midnight; for a student, like rewriting an assignment until three in the morning. Giving in to every request and numbing out after the kids are asleep are coping modes as well. None of these is a character flaw, and once you can see yours, you have a choice about it.

A regional economy that prizes output, whether that means release deadlines in AI and cybersecurity or production targets on a line, can make those patterns look like professionalism. The unrelenting-standards schema passes for ambition; self-sacrifice passes for being a team player. Schema therapy helps separate who you are from the survival strategy you learned, so the strategy can loosen its grip.

Ghazal Sheikhtaheri, a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), uses schema therapy as her primary framework, with advanced training from Germany, and joins it with attachment- and emotion-focused work. Early sessions map your schemas and coping modes; later ones work with them through imagery, chair work and guided reflection. Sessions are online, so you can take part from anywhere in Kitchener or elsewhere in Ontario, in English or Farsi.
