Sound Familiar?

What brings Iranian couples to therapy.

I.

The same argument on repeat

You keep having the same argument, but underneath it is something cultural that a non-Iranian therapist wouldn’t recognize.

II.

A growing cultural gap

One of you has adapted more to Canadian culture than the other, and that gap is pulling you apart.

III.

Family involvement that never stops

Family involvement in your marriage feels constant, and setting boundaries feels like betrayal.

IV.

Your parents’ communication style

You love each other, but you communicate the way your parents did, and it’s not working.

V.

Impossible expectations

Expectations around gender roles, money, parenting, or in-laws feel impossible to negotiate without someone getting hurt.

VI.

Too much gets lost in English

You’ve thought about couples therapy before, but couldn’t imagine doing it in English, and finding someone in Durham Region who works in Farsi felt unlikely. Too much gets lost.

You don't need to fix everything before you call. Start with a conversation, from home in Oshawa.

What Iranian Couples Bring to Therapy

Every relationship is different, but here's what we consistently work with.

Cultural gaps within the relationship

One partner adapted more to Canadian norms, the other holds Iranian values. Neither is wrong, but the gap creates daily friction.

Extended family pressure

Marriage is not private in many Iranian families. Setting boundaries can feel like abandoning your culture.

Communication patterns inherited from your family of origin

Silence, explosion, guilt, avoidance from your parents' home becomes your own pattern. Schema Therapy traces these to their origin.

The strain of immigration on a marriage

Roles shift, financial pressure increases, social networks shrink, and in a city where the Persian community is small, the network can shrink further. These are structural pressures, not personal failures.

Premarital concerns

For couples approaching marriage, especially when families are involved, and sometimes spread between Oshawa, Toronto and Iran, premarital therapy helps align expectations honestly.

FAQ

Farsi couples therapy: what people ask before they book.

Can we do therapy in Farsi even if my partner doesn’t speak it?
Yes, sessions flow in both languages.
Will our families find out?
No. Sessions are confidential under CRPO standards, with limits required by law: for example, risk of serious harm, suspected child abuse or neglect, sexual abuse by a regulated health professional, or a court order. We review these limits with you at the start.
What if we’re not married yet?
Premarital therapy is highly effective, especially with family expectations.
Do you understand the specific dynamics of Iranian marriages?
Yes, from lived experience. Ghazal understands ta’arof, family honour, gendered expectations, and Persian families expressing love through control.
Is Farsi-speaking couples therapy available to people in Oshawa?
Yes. Couples therapy is offered online across Ontario, so partners in Oshawa can meet from home in Farsi, English or a mix of both, without driving west to Toronto or York Region. Ghazal Sheikhtaheri, an Iranian immigrant and Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), works with EFT and Schema Therapy. Tina Abadi, RP, and Roya Dadollahi Sarab, RP, offer EFT in the same two languages. Only one partner needs to speak Farsi for sessions to be helpful.
I'm Iranian and my partner isn't. Will therapy end up taking my side?
It shouldn't, and Ghazal, Tina and Roya all work to make sure each partner feels understood. Cultural knowledge helps explain what one partner's family may expect; it doesn't decide who is right. Sessions can move between languages so the partner who doesn't speak Farsi is never left out, and the focus stays on the cycle between you rather than on either person's background.

Oshawa

Persian & Farsi couples therapy for Oshawa couples

Persian and Iranian couples in Oshawa often build their life at some distance from the communities they grew up around. Persian did not make the top six non-official mother tongues in Durham Region's summary of the 2021 Census, and for many couples the nearest large Persian community is further west, in Toronto or York Region. Weekends can turn into a negotiation about whose family to visit, how long to stay, and whether the drive, or the train from Oshawa GO, the last stop on the Lakeshore East line, is worth it this time.

Distance also shapes the relationship itself. Some couples here are mixed: one partner raised in an Iranian family and the other not, or one who arrived as an adult and one who grew up in Canada. Expectations about in-laws, money, gender roles and how an argument is supposed to sound can differ quietly for years before they surface. Without an extended Persian network nearby, there may be no aunt or old friend who understands both sides and can translate between you.

Practical questions come up as well: whether to spend Nowruz with family in Toronto or keep it small at home, how much to send to relatives in Iran, whose parents come to stay and for how long. Couples therapy doesn't hand down answers. It helps you make those decisions together rather than in a standoff.

Winter can sharpen all of this. When the drive along the 401 is slow and dark and family visits get postponed, a couple that already feels far from its community can end up more alone with each other, and small resentments have fewer places to go.

Couples therapy gives that translation a structure. Emotionally Focused Therapy maps the cycle you fall into, perhaps one partner pursuing and the other withdrawing, and slows it down until each of you can hear what the other is actually asking for. Ghazal Sheikhtaheri, Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), CRPO #21300, adds Schema Therapy to trace the family blueprints each of you brought into the marriage. Tina Abadi, RP, and Roya Dadollahi Sarab, RP, work with couples in Emotionally Focused Therapy, in Farsi or English.

Sessions can move between Farsi and English as the conversation needs, and only one partner has to speak Farsi. Everything happens online, so couples in Oshawa meet from their own home. If you split your time between Oshawa and relatives in Toronto, you can join from whichever home you are in that week, as long as you are both in Ontario and have a private room.
