About the Approach

What is Schema Therapy?

Schema therapy addresses the deep emotional patterns (called "schemas") formed in childhood that continue to shape your relationships, self-image, and reactions to stress. It goes beyond surface-level symptoms to work with the root causes, combining cognitive, emotional, and experiential techniques.

What to Expect

What Schema Therapy Looks Like in Practice

In the early phase, we work together to map out the core patterns, or schemas, that are shaping your life. This might include patterns like abandonment, emotional deprivation, self-sacrifice, or defectiveness. Most people recognise their patterns quickly once they have a framework for them.

From there, sessions move into deeper emotional work: understanding where these patterns formed, what needs went unmet, and how your coping strategies developed. Schema therapy uses a combination of cognitive techniques, chair work, imagery, and guided reflection to work with these patterns at both a thinking and feeling level.

Over time, the goal is to develop what schema therapists call the "Healthy Adult" mode: a stronger internal voice that can meet your own needs, set boundaries, and respond to old triggers differently.

Questions

Schema Therapy FAQ

What's the difference between schema therapy and CBT?
CBT focuses on changing thoughts and behaviours in the present. Schema therapy goes deeper. It addresses the childhood origins of your patterns and uses emotional and experiential techniques alongside cognitive ones. Many clients find schema therapy reaches places that CBT alone didn't.
How long does schema therapy take?
It depends on the complexity of your patterns. Some clients see meaningful shifts in 3-6 months. Deeper, more entrenched patterns may take longer. We'll discuss realistic expectations during your consultation.
Is schema therapy right for me?
If you notice recurring patterns in relationships, struggle with self-worth, or feel stuck despite previous therapy, schema therapy may be an excellent fit. A free consultation can help us determine this together.
Are sessions online?
Yes. All sessions are virtual and available in Windsor and across Ontario.
Do you offer sessions in Farsi?
Yes. Sessions are available in Farsi (فارسی), English, or both.
I grew up watching my parents worry about plant layoffs, and now I can't stop bracing for the worst. Is that the kind of pattern schema therapy works with?
It can be. A childhood spent around real financial uncertainty can leave what schema therapists call a vulnerability-to-harm schema, a sense that disaster is always close, which stays active even when life is stable. Schema therapy traces that belief to where it began and helps you respond to present risks as they actually are. Ghazal Sheikhtaheri, a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), CRPO #21300, offers online sessions for people in Windsor in English and Farsi.
In Windsor it can feel as if everyone knows everyone. How private is online therapy?
There is no waiting room and no office to be seen walking into; you join from a private space at home. What you discuss is confidential, within the legal limits explained at the start of therapy, and nothing is shared with your employer, family or community.
I'm retiring after decades at the same plant and I feel strangely lost. Is that something schema therapy can help with?
It can. When work has organized your days and your sense of worth for a long time, retirement can uncover older beliefs, such as that you are only valuable when you are useful. Schema therapy helps you recognize those beliefs and build a sense of yourself that does not depend on a job title or a shift schedule. Sessions are online, in English or Farsi.

Windsor

Schema therapy for Windsor lives

From Windsor's riverfront you look straight across the Detroit River at another country, and much of the city's working history has been shaped by the trade and traffic between the two. Schema therapy recognizes a similar split inside many people: a present self facing one direction, and an older self, formed in childhood, still standing on the far bank and reacting to a world that no longer exists. The work is to help those two meet.

In a city where 17 per cent of the labour force was in trades, transport and equipment operator occupations in 2021, work and identity are often closely tied, and if your family has worked in the same industry for generations, the bond can run deep. Schemas can form around it. The person who learned early that love is earned by being useful may become the worker who never takes a sick day; the child who watched a parent's layoff turn a household upside down may carry a quiet conviction that security can vanish overnight. Those beliefs made sense once. The question is whether they still fit.

Money often sits right on top of these patterns. In 2020, half of Windsor residents with an income had less than about $36,400, and when the budget is tight, schemas around worth, providing and failure get louder. Schema therapy separates the practical problem from the old verdict it wakes up, so you can deal with the first without being flattened by the second. A tight month can wake the belief that you are failing your family, even when the cause is a production schedule or a rent increase no one in the household could control.

Many people come to schema therapy after years of good-enough coping: working hard, keeping busy, not dwelling on the past. Then a change, a layoff, a retirement, children leaving home, removes the routine that was keeping an old feeling at bay, and the feeling seems to come from nowhere. It usually has a long history, and that history is where the work begins.

Schemas also shape how people parent. A parent who grew up with little praise may find themselves withholding it from their own children; a parent raised to absorb everyone's stress may struggle to let a teenager carry anything. Seeing the pattern clearly is often what allows it to stop with you.

Ghazal Sheikhtaheri, a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), CRPO #21300, pursued advanced schema therapy training at CASMH Health Institute in Germany. Early sessions map your core schemas and the ways you have learned to cope with them; later work uses imagery, chair work and cognitive techniques to strengthen the Healthy Adult. Sessions are online, anywhere in Windsor or across Ontario, in English, Farsi or both.
