What Brings Families In

Two sets of assumptions, one household

Very little of this work is about a single argument. It is usually about what each generation takes for granted: what respect looks like, what a parent is owed, how much of a life is a private matter, and how much of a decision belongs to the person making it. Those assumptions used to be shared by everyone in the room. Often they are not any more, and everyone involved can still be entirely reasonable.

The Approach

Structured, and in both languages

Language is part of the mechanism here, not a detail. It is ordinary for parents to think and feel in Farsi while children answer in English, and for the weight of a sentence to survive in one language and not the other. A session held only in English asks the parents to argue in their second language; only in Farsi, and it asks the same of the children. These move between both.

The work itself is practical. Emotionally focused and cognitive behavioural approaches for the conversations that keep going wrong. It is for families with teens, adolescents and young adults. The aim is a different conversation at home this week, not a new theory about your household.

Nobody is put on trial in the room.

Questions

Common questions

Part of our family is still in Iran and a lot of the tension runs through that. Is that in scope?
Yes, and it is a frequent theme in this work: obligation across distance, decisions made on video calls, and the particular weight carried by whoever came first. Sessions address the family as it actually is rather than only the part of it in this country. Tina Abadi, RP (CRPO #13777), works in Farsi and English.
Who is family therapy for?
For families with teens, adolescents and young adults. Sessions are virtual across Ontario, in English and Farsi, with Tina Abadi, RP.
Who comes to a family session?
Whoever the work needs, and not always everyone at once. Sometimes it is two parents; sometimes a parent and an adult child; sometimes one person for several sessions before anyone else joins. Nobody is required to attend in order for the work to be useful, and nobody is put on trial in the room.
Can the session be in Farsi?
Yes, and it can move between Farsi and English as the family does. That matters more in family work than anywhere else, because it is common for parents to think in Farsi and children to answer in English, and a session that forces one language onto everyone quietly takes a side.
What kind of therapy is this?
Cognitive behavioural and emotionally focused work for families with teens, adolescents and young adults. It is structured and practical: the aim is a different conversation at home this week, not only a better understanding of an old one.
How long does this usually take?
Shorter than most people expect for a specific, nameable difficulty, and longer where a pattern has been running for years. Six to twelve sessions is a common shape for work of this kind, and it is reviewed with you rather than decided in advance.
What does it cost, and is it covered?
Family sessions are $250 for 60 minutes and $375 for 90 minutes, for families with teens, adolescents and young adults. Sessions are virtual across Ontario, in English and Farsi. A free 15-minute consultation is the place to start. Receipts are provided after every session. Tina Abadi is a fully Registered Psychotherapist, so psychotherapy with an RP is commonly covered for her sessions; it is still worth confirming the details with your insurer.

Waterloo

Family Therapy for Waterloo families

Waterloo is the university and tech heart of the region's innovation corridor: two universities, a large tech sector, and a fast, high-pressure culture of knowledge work that draws students and skilled immigrants from around the world. A great many Persian-speaking households here are recent, and some are split, with part of the family still in Iran.

A split family is its own kind of family work. Decisions get made across time zones and on video calls; grandparents parent at a distance and are parented at a distance in return; and the members who came first carry a responsibility to those who did not that rarely gets discussed as the burden it is. Meanwhile the children growing up here are becoming people their relatives abroad would not entirely recognise.

Sessions can hold that complexity rather than treating the household here as the whole family. In Farsi, English, or both, for families with teens, adolescents and young adults, online across Ontario.
