What brings Iranian couples to therapy.

I.

The same argument on repeat

You keep having the same argument, but underneath it is something cultural that a non-Iranian therapist wouldn’t recognize.

II.

A growing cultural gap

One of you has adapted more to Canadian culture than the other, or you grew up in different cultures altogether, and the gap is pulling you apart.

III.

Family involvement that never stops

Family involvement in your marriage feels constant, and setting boundaries feels like betrayal.

IV.

Your parents’ communication style

You love each other, but you communicate the way your parents did, and it’s not working.

V.

Impossible expectations

Expectations around gender roles, money, parenting, or in-laws feel impossible to negotiate without someone getting hurt.

VI.

Too much gets lost in English

You’ve thought about couples therapy before, but couldn’t imagine doing it in English. Too much gets lost.

You don't need to fix everything before you call. Start with a conversation.

What Iranian Couples Bring to Therapy

Every relationship is different, but here's what we consistently work with.

Cultural gaps within the relationship

One partner adapted more to Canadian norms, the other holds Iranian values. Neither is wrong, but the gap creates daily friction.

Extended family pressure

Marriage is not private in many Iranian families. Setting boundaries can feel like abandoning your culture.

Communication patterns inherited from your family of origin

Silence, explosion, guilt, avoidance from your parents' home becomes your own pattern. Schema Therapy traces these to their origin.

The strain of immigration on a marriage

Roles shift, financial pressure increases, social networks shrink. These are structural pressures, not personal failures.

Premarital concerns

For couples approaching marriage, especially when two families with different cultures or faiths are involved, premarital therapy helps align expectations honestly.

FAQ

Farsi couples therapy: what people ask before they book.

Can we do therapy in Farsi even if my partner doesn’t speak it?
Yes, sessions flow in both languages.
What if my partner won’t come?
Common. Start individually, your patterns often shift the dynamic.
Will our families find out?
No. Sessions are confidential under CRPO standards, with limits required by law: for example, risk of serious harm, suspected child abuse or neglect, sexual abuse by a regulated health professional, or a court order. We review these limits with you at the start.
Is online couples therapy effective?
Yes, research shows equivalent outcomes to in-person.
What if we’re not married yet?
Premarital therapy is highly effective, especially with family expectations.
Do you understand the specific dynamics of Iranian marriages?
Yes, from lived experience. Ghazal understands ta’arof, family honour, gendered expectations, and Persian families expressing love through control.
Is Farsi couples therapy available to couples in Windsor?
Yes. Sessions are online across Ontario, so couples in Windsor meet with Ghazal Sheikhtaheri, a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), by video from home, in Farsi, English or a mix. She uses Emotionally Focused Therapy and Schema Therapy and understands the family and cultural expectations many Iranian couples carry. Tina Abadi, RP, and Roya Dadollahi Sarab, RP, also offer Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples online, in Farsi and English. Only one partner needs to speak Farsi.
One of us is Iranian and the other grew up in an Arab family. Can you work with a mixed couple like ours?
Yes. For mixed-culture couples the conflict is often less about the two of you and more about two sets of rules for family, faith and how disagreement should sound. Sessions are held in English, Farsi or both. They are not offered in Arabic, so a partner who does not speak Farsi takes part in English, and the conversation can move between languages so neither of you is left out.

Windsor

Farsi couples therapy at the far end of the 401

Windsor sits at the western end of Highway 401, a long drive from the GTA, where most of Ontario's Persian-speaking community life is concentrated. The Iranian community here is small. In the 2021 Census the West Asian group, which counts Iranians together with Afghans, Turks and others, was 1.8 per cent of Windsor's residents, so an Iranian couple may know only a few other Farsi-speaking families, and the aunts, parents and family friends who might once have stepped in during a hard stretch are often an ocean away.

A smaller community brings its own pressures. There may be fewer people to confide in, and the ones you do know may know your families too. Some couples are also mixed: an Iranian partner with a Canadian-born spouse, or with a partner from an Arab, Afghan or South Asian background, each bringing different ideas about in-laws, money, religion and how conflict should sound. Neither set of expectations is wrong. Couples therapy helps each of you say what you need without first translating it into the other's rules, with someone who sits outside your social circle entirely.

Study and work can add strain as well. Non-permanent residents, many of them international students, made up 3.3 per cent of Windsor's population in 2021. If one of you is in a graduate program or on a study or work permit, the relationship may be living with deadlines, paperwork and uncertainty about what comes next, often with one partner's career on hold. Emotionally Focused Therapy helps you see the cycle that forms under that pressure; Schema Therapy looks at the older patterns each of you brings from home.

Couples raising children in Windsor often find they disagree about more than they expected: which language is spoken at home, how strict to be, how much freedom a teenager should have compared with what each of you had growing up. Those disagreements usually carry each partner's own childhood inside them, which is exactly what Schema Therapy helps you see.

Faith can be part of this too. Partners who share a background may still practise differently, and partners from different backgrounds may be negotiating holidays, family rituals or how children will be raised. These conversations go better with someone who respects each partner's commitments and does not treat either one as the problem.

Ghazal Sheikhtaheri, a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), CRPO #21300, immigrated from Iran and works with couples in Farsi, English or both; only one of you needs to speak Farsi. Sessions are online, so you meet from home in Windsor, with 60- and 90-minute options; Tina Abadi, RP, and Roya Dadollahi Sarab, RP, offer Emotionally Focused Therapy in the same two languages. A free 15-minute consultation, with one or both of you, is an easy first step.
